The Do's and Don'ts of Water Damage

Know what to do when water damage occurs at your home or business!

When it comes to water damage, immediate action is absolutely necessary. Waiting too long to take action can lead to further damage and destruction. SERVPRO of Douglas & Otter Tail Counties will respond immediately to the call. With their advanced equipment and techniques to remove the water, you don’t need to worry! However, when it comes to water damage, there are a few do’s and don'ts we want you to know:

For Clean Water…

DO:

• If possible, shut off the source of water immediately or contact a qualified party to do so for you.
• Ensure that all circuit breakers are off in affected areas to avoid electric shock.
• Remove as much of the standing water as you can using either a mop or towel.
• Wipe excess water from all wood furniture to avoid distortion and damage.
• Remove and prop up all wet upholstery to allow for even drying.
• Remove and store all wall decor, electronics, documents, and other important materials in a dry space.

DON’T

• Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
• Use your vacuum cleaner to remove water, this can lead to electric shock.
• Turn on any appliance while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not wet concrete floors.
• Turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet or sagging from retained water.

For Contaminated Water…

DO:

• Avoid any sort of contact with sewage and items that may be contaminated by sewage.
• Wash your hands thoroughly if you have been in contact with contaminated items.

DON’T:

• Spread contaminated water by walking into uncontaminated areas.
• Turn on the HVAC system if there is any sort of possibility for spreading contaminated air.
• Use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.
